Ayurveda:
"Hatha & Raja Yoga are incomplete without an
Ayurvedic view of the body & mind."
David Frawley, 'Yoga & Ayurveda'
In Ayurvedic teachings the world around us is described according to its effect on the senses (indriya) via its quality (guna).
The wind (vayu), the sun (surya) and the moon (chandra) were considered three primal forces in nature, and so, the Tridosha, Vata (to move), Pitta (to heat) and Kapha (to pull together) were christened.
A -Vata: My energy is inconsistent and usually comes in bursts
B - Pitta: My energy levels are moderate
C - Kapha: My energy tends to be fairly steady but I’m often lazy
In Western Medicine it is accepted that a balance of biological elements must be maintained in order to stay healthy. (ie. blood sugar, oestrogen, body fluids, enzymes, bacteria etc.) In Ayurveda this balance is measured through the doshas. The doshas are measured by assessing the quality of the body (dry, hot, inactive, etc).
You can now fill out your Doshic Imbalance Questionnaire
If your prakriti or original constitution has more Vata, Pitta or Kapha in it, you will exhibit many of the characteristics and qualities of that dosha more than the others, and that's natural. But if the qualities increase past YOUR natural quantity then the dosha has become aggravated or imbalanced, and needs to be brought back into balance.
