Ayurvedic Guide to Constipation: Reset Your Digestion, Restore Your Health

A complete, satisfying bowel movement ideally happens every morning, at roughly the same time, ideally upon waking. Signs that elimination isn’t complete include:

  • Straining or heaviness

  • Feeling unsatisfied afterward

  • Stools that are hard, dry, slimy, or sink heavily

  • Needing stimulants (coffee, laxatives) to go

🔎 Types of Constipation

Kapha-type:

  • Slow, heavy, sluggish bowels

  • Days may pass between movements

Pitta-type:

  • Frequent but unsatisfying movements

  • Going but feel ‘incomplete’

Vata-type:

  • Dry, hard, tight ‘pellet’ stools

  • Pain, bloating, gas

Food Medicine:

  • Barley soup: grounds and binds stools gently

  • Use a squatty potty (or stool under feet) to support proper posture

  • Eat a heavier lunch and lighter dinner

🌶️ Second-Line, Dosha-Specific Supports

Kapha constipation:
